Konsiderate range of Certified Compostable Bags are an easy solution to eliminate the use of traditional plastic garbage bags and when used to dispose of Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) we can reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfill and put it to good use by composting.
Waste not, want not
The latest National Waste Report shows 75.8 million tonnes of solid waste generated in 2018-19, a 10% increase from the last two years. 15.3 million tonnes (20%) of total waste comprise of organic waste material with the organic waste type breakdown below.
Sadly, only 42% of total organic waste was sent for recycling (6.4 million tonnes), while 45% was sent to landfill (6.9 million tonnes).
When plastic is not fantastic
Thanks to the introduction of the plastic ban, plastic waste represents 3% of total waste, down from 4% in 2016-17. However, we’re still looking at 2.5 million tonnes of plastic generated that lasts forever.
Only 9% was sent for recycling (227,000 tonnes), while 84% was sent to landfill (2.1 tonnes)
Composting done right
It’s important to know, typically when organic matter ends up in landfill it decomposes anaerobically (without oxygen) producing methane gas which is 28 times more harmful than carbon dioxide, contributing to global warming. This type of decay is not only harmful and takes a long time to breakdown, it also attracts pathogens that can be toxic and gives out a bad odour.
Composting in the right environments allows us to recycle organic waste. It can be used to convert waste to renewable energy to generate electricity in addition to making good use of nutrients to feed back to plants and the earth. Aerobic composting requires oxygen to allow microbes to breakdown organic material to make mulch and soil fertilisers. An alternative to landfill, industrial anaerobic digestion tanks allow organic waste to produce biogas to produce electricity and heat, or can be converted to pure biomethane gas as a renewable energy or fuel.
Certified Industrial (AS4736) and Home Compostable (AS5810) to Australian Standards are made from non-edible grade, non-GMO renewable cornstarch. As they are designed to breakdown, these bags have a recommended 12 month shelf life. However, if stored and seal tightly away from light, air and moisture they will keep in usable condition longer.
Our branded Konsiderate Compostable Bin Liners are a great alternative to traditional plastic garbage bags. Suitable for commercial use and strong in quality, they are readily available in 10, 40, 60, 80 and 240 litre sizes.
